[WinPlot]
A free graphing program. This is the one we use in class.
[Measure Units Ladder]
10-24-2005 Math 2a

1. Page 62 Problem 5.1 (modified)
OBJECTIVE: •To use a rule to generate a table or graph on the graphing calculator [1.5.1 ] •To use a graphing calculator or graphing software to compare the tables and graphs of various rules; in particular, to decide whether a given rule defines a straight-line (linear) function by examining graphs [1.5.2] ACTIVITIES/ASSESSMENT: Page 62 Problem 5.1 (modified). Students will be required to plot equation sets 1 and 4 on the computer using WinPlot. They will carefully transfer the plots to graph paper by matching appropriate intersections. Students will generate data tables and graphs manually for sets 2 and 3. NOTES: Review integer operations and rule writing if necessary. HOMEWORK: Page 68 #3. Be specific in your answer or develop a labelled model.

3. Measure Drill [1.2.3] [Measure Units Ladder]
OBJECTIVE: See 10-24 above. ACTIVITIES/ASSESSMENT: Conduct a measure drill - student may use teaching aids. Finish the plotting exercies listed for 10-23 above. This includes 6 manual plots and 6 digital plots. NOTES: HOMEWORK: (handout) Page 77 problem #3

2. Measure Drill [1.2.3] [Measure Units Ladder]
3. Introduction to [Data Around Us]
Prob. 1.1
OBJECTIVE: •To consider some of the issues related to working with large numbers, including accuracy of reported numbers, methods of determining reported measures, and language used to make numerical comparisons [1.2.6] •To review operations with large numbers[1.1.1] ACTIVITIES/ASSESSMENT: Conduct a measure drill with teaching aid available. Introduce the new text 'Data Around Us' starting with a discussion of the information in investigation 1.1. Students will summarize data and list whether it is 'accurate' or 'estimated' data and why they think so. NOTES: HOMEWORK: Page 9 #1-2

3. Page 8 Problem 1.2 #B
OBJECTIVE: See 10-26 above. ACTIVITIES/ASSESSMENT: Conduct a measure drill with teaching aid available. Page 8 Problem 1.2 #B Read and answer the question as stated - i.e., list the 'assumptions' you had to make to determine your answer. NOTES: HOMEWORK: Page 10 #6 & #8

2. Pp 12-13 Problem 2.1
3. Measure Drill [1.2.3] [Measure Units Ladder]
OBJECTIVE: •To revisit the ways that numbers are used in measurement to describe objects and events •To begin building a repertoire of measurement benchmarks for use in relating measurement information to things that are personally meaningful •To develop skill in using benchmark strategies, such as comparing a given figure to multiple copies of a more familiar object [1.1.8; 4.2.2] ACTIVITIES/ASSESSMENT: Conduct a measure drill with teaching aid available. Complete problem 2.1 dealing with math and reading comprehension. NOTES: HOMEWORK: Page 19 1-3
