OBJECTIVE: •To develop a strategy for finding the volume of a rectangular prism by filling it with unit cubes. and to recognize that the number of cubes in the bottom layer is equal to the area of the base •To determine that the total number of unit cubes in a rectangular prism is equal to the area of the base times the height (the volume), and to discover that this strategy works for any prism •To learn that the surface area of a prism is the sum of the areas of its faces, and to apply this strategy to any right prism •To reason about problems involving volume and surface area.
