WASL Practice Problem - Due Friday 11-21

What are the odds that flipping a coin will result in heads? What are the odds that two students, each flipping a coin, will both get heads? What are the odds that three students, each flipping a coin, will all get heads? What are the odds that four students, each flipping a coin, will get heads? Will you ever reach the point where it is impossible for a group of students, each flipping a coin, to get head? Explain in detail how you found your answer using words, numbers, and/or pictures.

11-17-2003 Bring your calculator!
1. -HW P10 #6........
2. =Page 15 Problem 2.1+Follow_up.....

OBJECTIVE: •To gain experience finding experimental probabilities of unequally likely events[1.4.8][1.4.9] •To understand that chance (probability) is an estimate of behavior over the long run •To understand that to make good decisions based on experimental probabilities, the probabilities must be based on a large number of trials •To understand that a game of chance is fair only if each player has the same chance of winning, not just a possible chance of winning ACTIVITIES/ASSESSMENT:Page 14+, Problem 2.1, 'Tossing Marshmallows' (Actually, we will be using a substitute) Working in pairs, have students perform the experiment using pices of pvc pipe (2 sizes). Do problem and follow-Up on Page 15. NOTES: HOMEWORK: P17 #3

11-18-2003 Bring your calculator!
1. -HW Page 17 #3........
2. =Page 16 Problem 2.2+Follow-Up.....

OBJECTIVE: See 11-18 above. ACTIVITIES/ASSESSMENT: Students will work in pairs to complete problem 2.2. They may use coins or the computer simulation for this data NOTES: Give some information on rating scales between 0 and 1 (relate to %) HOMEWORK: P18 5-13

   Simulated Experimental Coin-Toss Data
How many coins? (2 or 3)
How many sets of coin tosses?
The results of the coin tosses will appear in a pop-up window. If you have pop-ups disabled, you might have to check to see if another window opened in the background.

11-19-2003 Bring your ruler! Bring your protractor!
1. -HW Page 8 5-13......
2. -Page 21 3 and 4.....

OBJECTIVE: Measure angles and central angles. ACTIVITIES/ASSESSMENT: Students will practice measuring angles and central angles using a protractor. The end goal is to be able to divide circles into appropriate parts for spinners or to measure spinners to determine appropriate probabilities. First worksheet will deal with the process of measureing angles; second worksheet on meauring central angles. NOTES: Distribute Progress Report #5. Glencoe - Measuring angles - page 296 HOMEWORK: Worksheet dependent.

1. =Progress Report #5...
2. -HW Angle Measure Exercise..

OBJECTIVE: see 11-19 above ACTIVITIES/ASSESSMENT: Continue measure exercise on angle measures. Have students construct spinners of 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10 and 12 equal segments. NOTES: 5 and 4 circle papers - demo spinner with bobby pin or paper clip. Rememeber the flat surfaces. Can Start intro to Investigation 3 HOMEWORK: None

11-21-2003
1. -WASL Pract7p5 (Practice Problem)...

OBJECTIVE: •To develop strategies for finding experimental probabilities with a new simulation tool: spinners •To understand that to make good decisions based on experimental probabilities, the probabilities must be based on a large number of trials[1.4.8][1.4.9] ACTIVITIES/ASSESSMENT: Page 22, Investigation 3, lesson 3.1 'Bargaining for a better bedtime' Working with partners do the problem and the follow up on page 22 and 23 NOTES: HOMEWORK: P24 #1
