Organization of Data - Midweek Problem

After a recent test, Mr. Greenstine created the following Stem-and-Leaf Plot to display the scores of his students.

Use the information on the graph to find the Range, Mean, Median and Mode of the data.

Use the following format to present your solution:

  • The results od Mr. Greenstines test score aanalysis is as follows:
    • Range =
    • Mean =
    • Median =
    • Mode =
  • To find the range I....(list how you set up the number sentence yous used as well as your solution)
  • To find the mean I...(list the number sentence and/or a descritpion of how you set up and solved this problem - include the meaning of mean.)
  • To find the median I...(show how you set this up and explain your process)
  • To find the mode I...(explain what mode is and you choice)

Building Fences - December 6, 1999

I sent my husband to the hardware store to buy picture hooks. He came home with thirty-six yards of fence material, just because it was on sale.

We are going to put the fencing around a rectangular garden that we have been planning. The twenty foot side of our shed will be along one of the edges of the garden. The fence will be attached to the ends of the shed.

I would like you to help me plan the garden so that we maximize the area of the garden. What is the largest possible area that can be enclosed with the fence? Please express your answer in square feet. In your explanation be sure to tell me the length and width of the garden and describe how you solved the problem.

Bonus: We will also need fence posts to place at the corners and every four feet along the fence. How many fence posts should we purchase?
