OBJECTIVE: Add Integers (7-4, Pp263ff) ACTIVITIES: With books closed: Give students the rules for adding numbers with the same sign. (positive + positive = positive; negative + negative = negative) Show students the problems on the overhead. Have them form into groups of three. They are to 'solve' the problems and come up with a written rule for adding numbers with different signs. While they may work on it as a group, they are to EACH submit a written copy of the rule (or as far as they get)(Put the "rule" on their notes to hand in tomorrow.) Ten minutes before the end of class, have students open their books to page 264 and give them the following interpretation of the rule: [To add numbers with different signs, first find the absolute value of both numbers. Second, subtract the smaller from the larger. Third, give the answer the same sign as the number with the larger absolute value. OBJECTIVE: Subtract integers((7-5, Pp268ff) ACTIVITIES: List problems on board. Have students solve and have each group explain their solution to one. Introduce the number line method of positive/negative number addition and subtraction. Have students Model. NOTES: [Integer Subtraction]graphic [Subtract Integer Model]graphic HOMEWORK: P270 20-25

OBJECTIVE: Multiply and divide integers (7-7, Pp278ff & 7-8, Pp281ff) ACTIVITIES: Review identical rules for multiplying and dividing integers (re: positive and negative numbers) Have student make an explanation of the process on the number line. NOTES: HOMEWORK: P280 17-19 and P282 15-17

OBJECTIVE: Solve equations with integer solutions(7-9, Pp284ff) ACTIVITIES: Review the procedures for solving equations; review the procedures for integer operations Do page 589 lesson 7-9, 7-15 and critique. NOTES: Time permitting, add some equations with positive and negative fractions and decimals. [Equation Tutorial/Review]graphic [Equation Models]graphic HOMEWORK: P286 35-39

Problem of the week (check the scoring guide) The problem of the week is due next Monday. Students are to use diagrams, charts, and tables as needed. Explain the process used to solve the problem. Be neat.

Jack and Jane are playing a game with the spinner on the right. Each person spins the spinner twice. The numbers are then added. If the sum is an odd number, Jack gets a point. If the sum is an even number, Jane gets a point. Will you get more even sums, more odd sums, or an equal number of each? Is this game fair? Why or why not? If the game is not fair, how could it be made fair?

spinner

Put different numbers on the spinner. Design a new game. Make a version of the game that is fair and a version that is unfair. Try the game with a partner.
